This was the surprise - the corner was all rotted.

The top picture is of John trying out his tile/grout cutting blade, something he's wanted to do for a long time and Matt following behind him with the ShopVac to catch the grout dust.

SubZero Zeroed Out

Here's Matt loosening the last of the drywall.

We've known for a while that the frig had to be replaced. It's built in and never has worked right. When the JA Trust check came, we knew what we had to do. Emily's husband, Matt, and our neighbor across the street, John, came over to help us pull it out. We discovered that it was worse than we had expected but it's certainly repairable.

Graduation was really nice. Luis Palau was the commencement speaker. He lives in Portland and attended Multnomah Bible College (John sr's alma mater and where John jr. is a student) Luis was given a scholarship to attend a private high school in Argentina (his home country) and became a Christian while attending that school, so he has a special place in his heart for Christian schools. He gave the grads a powerful charge to listen to God and to follow Him at all costs. He pointed right at Joanna and several of the others and kind of gave them a blessing. It was great!

A Contribution from Oregon

Hi All! The top pic is our 2 yr. old cat, Sookie, in her favorite lounge chair. Yes, that's the terra cotta chimney on our patio! We're pretty sure she likes that spot because it gets her out of Phoebe's reach. Phoebe thinks she's of the shepherding breed and likes to herd Sookie all over the place.
The next picture is Phoebe a few months ago. She turns 1 on Aug. 10th. She is just as sweet as she looks and cracks us up with her antics (except for the backyard digging and playing in the mud). Two things she does regularly: walks through anyone's legs AND makes up games with her toys. You can ask Ruth Ann and Phil about the walking through your legs. If you're not prepared, you may end up on the floor :>) As for making up games with her toys- she brings toys upstairs and then drops them down the stairs or through the railing so she can fetch them.
She also throws her toys for herself to chase. Ahhh... life should be so rough! Hopefully we'll be able to get some of the pictures from Joanna's graduation on the blog soon.

Long Day

Paul drove 800.7 miles yesterday from Hillsboro to Visalia! It took 14 hours of straight driving. I read to him from from one of Janet Evanovitch's books. We started it on the way up and finished it on the way home. Good book, good drive and glad to be home. It is still dirty air in northern California and again in our part of the state. I was bummed out but then I saw that there was a fire in or near Yosemite with 8 homes burned to the ground. I'm sure that is what we see in our air. Cannot see the mountains from our house today.

Bob Gets His Hair Cut

This is my first contribution to the new family blog. Dawn is one of the quilters and a retired hairdresser. She comes over every six weeks and cuts Bob's hair on the back lanai (so the clean-up is easy).

Portland Tour Day

Alli, Ben, Paul and I started the day with a visit to Sanborn's, which was a neighborhood restaurant in the Hollywood section of Portland. Their specialty is homemade everything from the sausage to yummy biscuits. Not to overshadow the biscuits but we had to choose from 4 homemade jams too: blackberry, strawberry, blueberry and yes, raspberry!

After that we visited OMSI to check out the submarine exhibit. We got there too late for a tour so we will return on another trip but we did get to walk around and know it will be a fun visit. Next we went to the Japanese Garden for a walk in this peaceful setting that reminded all of us of our trip to the orient three years ago. Then we walked down to the rose garden which although fading after the rose festival last month, was still beautiful and a great walk. Next we drove the area looking at houses and visiting an area Alli and Ben like in either Beaverton or Hillsboro, I don't know which. We picked up some Oregon blueberries to have with pound cake and cream for dessert. Paul and Ben bicycled to Blockbuster for a movie and we were set.

P.S. Bicycling is HUGE up here with lots of trails, routes, clubs and signs. One must be very aware of bicyclists when driving as they are everywhere. The weather has been very nice so I guess everyone pulls out their bike. I didn't know that when I took up cycling with Paul that we were apparently in training to be Oregonians.
